Summer Sessions Loan

The Summer Sessions Loan may be available to eligible students enrolled in at least 6 units in Summer Session.  Students who meet the eligibility requirements below and who meet all other financial aid eligibility requirements may be eligible for this low-interest subsidized loan.

Please wait until you receive the ACS email (entrance_mpn@berkeley.edu) before completing the loan requirements, the email will be sent starting May 1 for the summer term. Complete Loan Requirements: If you received an email advising you to complete the loan requirements, begin at the Financial Counselor website. After you complete the Entrance Counseling (be sure to select "Institutional Loans" before yout take the Entrance Interview Quiz during the session), you will be automatically routed to the E-Sign website, where you can complete your personalized Promissory Note and Truth in Lending (TILA) documentation.

Eligibility Requirements

Be a UC Berkeley student.

Meet eligibility requirements for the Middle Class Access Plan (MCAP) award or receives the Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) in the 2016-17 academic year.

Meet all other financial aid eligibility requirements. 

Maximum award amount $3000.

Enrolled in at least 6 units in any single UC Berkeley Summer Session or combination of sessions, Berkeley Summer Abroad program, and Education Abroad Program (EAP).

Not available to eligible students enrolled through the Summer Intercampus Program or Consortium Study Agreement Program.

Completing the Loan Requirements

If you are eligible, the Summer Sessions Loan will automatically be included as part of your summer financial aid package. You can view your summer financial aid package on CalCentral in the Summer Session pages. If you wish to borrow this loan, you can begin completing the loan requirements by simply accepting the loan online.

To receive a Summer Session Loan at UC Berkeley, you need to complete 
the required processes by the following deadline at the latest:

You will not be able to begin the process until you receive the ACS email 
from entrance_mpn@berkeley.edu starting May 1.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE

After you accept the loan, the loan servicer, ACS, will create a series of online processes for you to complete. Once ready, ACS will send you an email instructing you to complete the loan requirements starting May 1. In the email, ACS will refer to a Complete Loan Requirements link, which we are including here for your convenience. You will not have access to these online loan processes until you have received your email from ACS.  The processes include:

Entrance Counseling (select "Institutional Loans" before you take the Entrance Interview Quiz during the session)

Loan Application and Solicitation Form (Truth in Lending Act document)

Loan Approval Form (Truth in Lending Act document)

Self-Certification Form (Truth in Lending Act document)

Final Approval Form (Truth in Lending Act document)

Promissory Note 

After you complete Entrance Counseling, a separate window will appear for you to complete the Promissory Note and TILA documents.

​​​​If you cannot successfully complete the online loan requirements (Entrance Counseling, Promissory Note and Truth in Lending (TILA) documents), contact us for assistance by visiting Cal Student Central or open a case. Be sure to include your Berkeley student ID.

If you are unable to complete and sign the MPN and Truth in Lending Self-Certification Form online and recevie the following message:

"Unable To Verify

We're sorry.  Your identity was not able to verified based on the information you provided.  Consequently, your Truth in Lending Self-Certification Form AND your promissory note HAVE NOT been signed."

Please DO NOT send in your paper MPN and Truth in Lending Self-Certification Form, please log back into the system and attempt to re-authenticate.  This time, please select that you DO NOT have a social security number and proceed to complete and sign the MPN and TILA documents (Truth in Lending Self-Certification and Final Approval Forms).

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER

A few days after you successfully complete all of your loan requirements, the funds will be ready for disbursement to your account. Your loan will disburse no sooner than 10 days before the start date of your program. 

Repayment Terms

Interest accrual and repayment of the Summer Sessions Loan begin 9 months after you leave school or anytime you drop below half-time enrollment.

Interest is fixed at 5%

The standard repayment period is 5 years

UC Berkeley is your lender. You will make your payments to Berkeley's contracted loan servicer, ACS.

Before leaving school or graduating, be sure to complete your Institutional Loan Exit Interview.

Keep your contact information up-to-date with Berkeley so that you receive important information about your repayment.

Toward the end of your 9-month grace period, you should receive information about beginning repayment.  If you have not received anything at the beginning of the 9th month of your grace period, contact Berkeley at accountconsultants@berkeley.edu.

You can repay your loan without penalty.  This means that the faster you pay your loan, the less interest you pay over time.
