Answers to “Federal Updates” Frequently Asked Questions

Is there still time to be included in the legacy provisions?

Yes. As the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office (FASO) staff shared last fall, you may want to consider borrowing federal student loans this year to take advantage of the current limits and legacy provisions for the remainder of your program. If you go this route, you will need to accept your 2025–26 loans by the UC Berkeley loan process deadlines and complete all other loan requirements before July 1, 2026.

Is there time to be included in the legacy provisions with programs with summer start dates?

Legacy provisions require students to receive loan payments prior to July 1, 2026.

How will loan proration work?

Loan proration in basic terms is a determination on how much you can borrow if you are enrolled less than full time. Specific details on how loan proration will work based on the H.R.1 bill have not been finalized. Our office will share information about loan proration as soon as it becomes available. This change currently is scheduled to go into effect for the 2026-27 academic year.

Am I still eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)?

As of now, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is still available for qualifying legacy borrowers; it is not an option with private loan borrowing.
